Man loses job after unauthorized absence to rescue baby moose
editor1 August 2, 2024Elephant . Lion & Tiger . Nature . Photography ArticleWe all might expect our good deeds to pay off with at least a little gratitude and praise. But in the case of Mark Scage, it was completely different. Mark was fired from work because he saved a baby moose from being mauled by a black bear. Let’s learn more about why Mark’s kind heart resulted in the loss of his job.
Mark happened to be in the right place at the right time.
Mark Skage rescued a baby moose found near a busy road in British Columbia, Canada. His actions were prompted by concern for the moose’s safety in proximity to potential dangers, including the presence of a black bear nearby. Subsequently, Mark faced employment termination due to violations of established wildlife handling protocols.
Mark acknowledged that handling wildlife is against regulations but maintained that he felt morally compelled to intervene. “I couldn’t ignore it. Black bears are the main threat to these calves,” he explained. “I couldn’t protect the predator, but I had to do something for the calf.”
During his interview, Mark described noticing the calf alone by the roadside, vulnerable to passing vehicles. Moved by concern, he pulled over and attempted to guide the animal away from the highway.
As Mark left the car door open, the baby moose quickly approached, attempting to climb into the pickup truck. Mark couldn’t resist the urge to provide the young moose with a safe ride.
“We bonded during the journey home. We spent about 5 and a half hours together in the pickup truck,” Mark recalled in an interview.
While driving, Mark contacted the B.C. Conservation Officer Service to arrange a secure location for the calf. Ultimately, he transported the calf to a wildlife rehabilitation center.
